Russia in Danish Media
Introduction
When the Danish media has a report from Russia, it usually has something to do with the governments wrongdoings. Well, those wrongdoings may only be wrongdoings in our view, but it’s definitely portrayed as if the people don’t agree with the government at all. We’re told the government rules Russia with an iron fist, which doesn’t allow any freedom, and that harsh punishments rain down upon people who even utter a word of disobedience/resistance. We are told that people have no free will, and that they are scared into obedience.
We have been tasked of showing the way Russia is generally portrayed by Danish media, and we’ll be highlighting some of the most prominent issues.
Electoral fraud
The focus from the Danish media is much on Russia’s system of government and their behaviour. In Denmark we hear a lot about election fraud and how FN’s delegated are denied admission to the polling stations. The media gives us a picture of openly interference at the Russian elections.
FN/EU
When Russia is in the Danish media it’s mostly about subjects which affects Denmark or countries near us. Russia is not a part of EU, but they still have a great deal of influence on politics, mostly because of their oil resources which we are very dependent of. The fact that Russia have so large oil resources, they have a great influence on the entire world, because we are dependent of the oil. This is a reason why we have focus on their economy. As we mentioned earlier Russia is notorious for it’s wrong doings especially when it has something to do with new deals in EU.
In fact of that Russia isn't a part of EU the Danish media has so much focus on their politics. We want to know the difference between their system of government and our. We want to understand the solidarity or the lack of one in their society because it’s so dissimilar from our.
Russian propaganda turned to Satire
A Danish newspaper (www.b.dk) has taken a series of photos Putin has had photographers take of himself which displays him all different kinds of manly activities. They’ve then turned it into a series of photos which they’ve called “Putin - statsoverhovedet der kan ALT”, or in English “Putin - The head of state who is capable of EVERYTHING” (Which can be found here). It’s been turned into a sort of source of laughter, because it’s so surreal that he is capable of everything that is portrayed. It’s classic Danish humor, portraying our own government or leaders in satirical comic strips, and that’s basically what has happened. It ridicules Putin in a way, which may only be noticed by Danes, to other people it may just seem like a slideshow of pictures.
Corruption
Something we hear about a lot in the Danish media is corruption among the leading/richest people in Russia, who just pay their way out of everything. According to “www.politiken.dk” 60% of the Russian population believe corruption has worsened severely under Putins rule, “As number 146 out of 180 countries Russia is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Finland, New Zealand and Denmark are the least corrupt lands and they are number one, two and three.”. (p. 1 , ll. 35-37) That once again tells us how our media wants to highlight the issues Russia are having at the moment, and they want to tell us it’s really, really bad for the russian people, and that they don’t have any power of their own.
Conclusion
The Danish media really focuses on Russia in a very negative way. They keep telling us about various problems with Russia, without ever highlighting any good that comes out of Russia/happens in Russia.
